2010 Erdos & Morgan Worldwide Professional Investment Community Study
Released: April 29, 2010
On April 29th 2010, Erdos & Morgan released the 12th edition of the Worldwide Professional Investment Community Study. The sample for the 2010 edition of this study was again comprised of buy-side individuals, in firms with a minimum of $100 million (U.S. $) under management, serving one of the following functions: Analyst, Chief Investment Officer, Director of Research, Head of Trading or Portfolio Manager.
The study was conducted via the Erdos & Morgan, Inc. website. In total, the study was conducted in 37 different countries measuring media specific to each country.
Erdos & Morgan, Inc. developed 37 different surveys for each country. This permitted the media being measured to be more localized for the respondent, and thus not appear to be a study of only global or pan-regional publications and websites. The sample was obtained from Ipreo, a leading supplier of data to financial service firms. The study was conducted entirely in English.
For the first time ever, the study included the measurement of websites in addition to print media. There were over 100 financially oriented websites measured worldwide. Broadcast networks were also included in the US market only.
Print publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, (Bloomberg) BusinessWeek and The New York Times had the strongest average issue readership in the United States. Their websites from these same companies such as WSJ.com, Bloomberg.com, OnlineBarrons.com and NYTimes.com were also among the top 10 sites in the United States. Websites such as SeekingAlfa.com and Finance.Yahoo.com were also among the top rated sites as measured by unique monthly visitors.
The study also measured the number of registered social media members on LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter within the sample. For the entire sample, about 48% of the respondents reported being registered on LinkedIn and 29% reported being registered on Facebook. Both MySpace and Twitter reported fewer than 5% registered members. These numbers vary country by country.
Fieldwork for this study began September 22, 2009 and closed on December 22, 2009. The findings are based on responses from 3,956 individuals; this represents a net effective response rate of 33.7%
