Editorial Studies

Editorial Tracking Research
Publications feature articles and departments, as well as format and presentation are monitored over time, and occasionally competitively, to determine readers' ratings.

Editorial Development Testing
Asks subscribers (and sometimes expires) to rate their interest in, and readership of, articles and recurring features in the publication. At times, the study measures a specific issue, but at other times respondents are asked to assess the publication's sections and editorial content generally. These are sometimes called Table of Contents (TOC) surveys.

Editorial Concept Testing
Is usually used to measure interest in the appeal of new or proposed publication. Samples are comprised of people representative of the target group for the publication, and prototypes of the publication are used as survey props, particularly when face-to-face interviewing is involved.

Reader Audits
Readers are asked to evaluate a publication against others in the competitive set. These studies are meant to be diagnostic tools used by editors in the quest to improve the editorial product.
