Advertising Studies

Subscriber and Newsstand Buyer Studies
Measure demographic and product usage information from a scientifically drawn sample of a publication's circulation.

In-Publication Studies
Questionnaires are either randomly placed (blown-in) or bound into the publication at the production plant. Either a business reply envelope is included for the questionnaire’s return or the questionnaire itself can be folded so that business reply postage and return address appear on the outside.

Reader Panels
This research typically involves soliciting a group of loyal readers who agree to participate in periodic studies over a period of time. Research conducted among the panel can provide trend data; answer circulation/edit questions, and is often used to conduct value-added research for advertisers.

Readership/Positioning Studies
Studies of target audiences that usually contain a total audience readership question, together with questions regarding assessments of publications in a competitive set. Qualitative perceptions are gathered via questions regarding credibility, enjoyability, interest, ...etc. Sometimes contains questions such as..."publication I would miss most if it ceased publishing".

Advertising Tracking Studies
Sometimes known as "benchmark" research, or pre/post studies, this sort of research is designed to determine if an advertising campaign has met its communication objectives. Very often this sort of research is paid for by a publication on behalf of a client.

News Polls
Can be similar to reader panels but very often involve developing timely, representative data on important topics of the day, or breaking news regarding the publication's marketing category. The Wall Street Journal and USA Today have published polls conducted by Erdos & Morgan.

Market/Category "White Papers"
In-depth analyses of new editorial, or product, or market categories. This sort of secondary, or desk research is, at times, used to inform and educate the advertising marketplace about the publication's marketing category.

Advertiser Audits
Studies are conducted among clients and prospects, including advertising agencies, to determine criteria for purchase and which publications in a competitive set best fit those criteria. Through these studies, we can also gather sales force information...strengths, weaknesses, etc.

Advertising/Copy Testing
Usually a value-added piece of research to determine subscribers' recall of a specific advertisement that ran in a specific issue of a publication. Sometimes we are asked to pre-test advertisements before they run.

Advertising Readership Studies
As compared to advertising/copy testing, ad readership studies are conducted to determine readership of some or all of the advertisements in a specific issue of a publication. Readers are sometimes asked to assess the effectiveness of the advertisement and/or to comment on specific, selected advertisements. Some publications measure advertising in a number of issues during a year and over time, and develop ad norms.
